Helicopter noise is unacceptable & disturbing

Dear Editor:

A few years ago my husband and I retired and bought a condo at our dream location near the Hudson River. There are thousands of new condos being built on New Jersey's Gold Coast to suit the needs of people like ourselves, young professionals and culturally minded families.

We were shocked when we realized that we could not enjoy our new location due to helicopter activity. We can't open our windows nor can we sit on our lovely balcony because of the noise and vibration caused by these low flying sky intruders. We also worry about safety. Last year a helicopter crashed into the river near our residence.

The noise has greatly accelerated in the past year because tourist flights from the East Side Heliport in NYC have been diverted to the West Side Heliport on 30th St. They fly non stop, one after another, beginning early in the morning till late at night. They hover over the Hoboken/Weehawken area to land and take off. These helicopters seem to have no regulations regarding the height at which they fly nor the space in between them.

Try to take a walk on the new River Walk or any of the beautiful parks in the area, and the quiet calm that area residents deserve is not available. The many outdoor concerts, movies and sporting events made available to us are eclipsed by helicopters. With today's emphasis on the environment, this amount of noise is unacceptable! Please join in the crusade for a peaceful lifestyle and a better environment for our children.
