Dear Editor:
Tale of two northern New Jersey cities is similar of being victims of poor local political representation. First and foremost, Newark New Jersey had monumental social, economic problems since the late sites (60’s). In particular in 1968 almost the entire city of Newark was burned down by their own residents. From this date on, Newark didn’t make any progress under two former Mayors, Kenneth Gibson and Sharpe James who combined represented local government for almost forty years. During these difficult years not many people wanted to live in Newark. More or less Union City had similar experiences.
From 1970 to 1974 the city of Union City flourished under the leadership of former Commissioners James Lagomarsino and the late former Commissioner Harry Calandrilo. They were a big part of the local political organization – project 70. But a few years later the city was financially hurt by poor local representation and elected officials went to jail for wrongdoing.
But those dark years are behind and today under two outstanding mayors Union City and Newark are the talk of prosperity and where people of all kind want to live and raise a family. The two mentioned Mayors have similar vision and interest. Both Mayors are very strong against gang activity and Mayor Stack and Mayor Corey Booker are hands on mayors, both are in touch with the Police Dept, Fire Dept, Parking Authority and Public Work. These two young mayors are constantly walking the streets and listening to their constituents. If something is going wrong so this way they can fix the problem. In a short time as Mayor Corey Booker like Brian have conquered the trust of the people and that is extremely important because the people rally behind their leaders and this way both cities can live in harmony and progress.
As a lifetime resident I have never seen anyone that enjoys being the Mayor of their city as much as Brian does. Brian wakes up every morning thinking what he can do today for someone who is less fortunate than the average citizen and needs a helping hand.
Mayor Corey Booker will not stop changing and transforming the city of Newark like Brian has done here in Union City. Rightfully so, Mayor Booker has other political ambitions. In the near future Corey Booker is going to become US Senator of the State of New Jersey replacing the aging senior US Senator Frank Lautenburg. This great Nation more than ever before needs to elect Mayors like Corey and Brian P. Stack. If as a nation we really want to get out of this national recession and if we really want a positive future for our children.
Respectfully,
Oscar Cordero
